Roger Federer looked far from his best form in the first few months after his return to the circuit. Unlike what happened in 2017, the Swiss champion is struggling a lot to find the best sensations and the results are there to testify. Thanks also to a not impossible draw, the former world number 1 went all the way to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, but the clear defeat at the hands of Hubert Hurkacz – complete with bagels in the third set – certainly did not leave him indifferent. A knee relapse caused King Roger to give up the Tokyo Olympics, which was his other big goal of the season. Now one wonders if the 20-time Grand Slam champion will be ready for the US Open, kicking off in New York in about a month. The 39-year-old from Basel is spending his holidays in Croatia with his family. Even though he is enrolled in the Masters 1000 in Toronto and Cincinnati, Federer does not necessarily play them. During a recent interview on the Tennis Channel, Greg Rusedski expressed some pessimism about the Maestro.
Rusedski talks about Roger Federer
“Roger Federer has defied logic, he has defied time, he created a new game in 2017. There is not more he can create anymore because it was all based on movement, taking the ball early coming forward. So the question mark, will he be happy not being able to win majors again? And that is the big question mark only Roger can answer. Knowing Roger from quite a young age, around 16-17 years of age, I don’t think he will be satisfied just showing up without really believing he can win,” said Greg Rusedski on a show with the TENNIS channel. The 20-time Grand Slam winner, who turns 40 next month, decided not to travel to Tokyo for the Olympic Games after his quarter-final exit at Wimbledon. Federer has largely remained out of the public eye since then, although footage of the Swiss did recently surface on social media showing him participating in a tennis drill with his daughter Myla Rose and Arsenal football legend Thierry Henry. More recently, pictures of the Swiss legend's vacation in Croatia emerged on Twitter. In the pictures, the Swiss is seen sporting a graphic white t-shirt displaying a promenade next to the sea. Federer paired the t-shirt with blue swim shorts with a rather gaudy pattern. Roger Federer, currently ranked No. 9 in the world, is on the official entry list for the National Bank Open in Toronto. The Masters 1000 event is scheduled to begin on August 7.
